SPORT
A.— RUGBY. Coup de pied en demi-volée pour envoyer la balle par-dessus la barre des buts adverses. Manquer un drop; réussir un drop-goal. Synon. coup de pied tombé. On appelle toujours « drop » un coup de pied donné par un joueur qui laisse glisser le ballon de ses mains et le frappe quand il touche le sol (Comment parlent sportifs, Vie lang., 1952, p. 232).
SYNT. Botter, essayer, passer, tenter un drop; drop anticipé, manqué, réussi.
B.— TENNIS. Drop shot. Coup consistant à lancer la balle d'une manière qui la force à infléchir fortement sa trajectoire. Synon. balle brossée. Un drop amorti qui tombe au ras du filet (O. Lesourd ds Guide du tennis, 1934).
Prononc. et Orth. :[ (go:l)]. Au plur. des dropgoals. Étymol. et Hist. 1895 (Sports Athét., p. 13, c. 2 ds BONN.). Anglo-amér. dropgoal (composé de drop « chute » et de goal) cité ds Webster's comme var. de dropped goal (ce dernier dep. 1933 ds NED Suppl.2) cf. le part. passé adj. dropped (1896 ds NED Suppl.2) terme du football amér. désignant un goal « but » marqué par un drop-kick « coup de pied tombé ».
